Some lands carry their wounds quietly.

Hallowed Lands came from listening—a long, deliberate attention to places shaped by history, by politics, by the slow pressure of time. Places where the earth seems to remember longer than the people who inhabited it were allowed to. Where land has its own chronology, older than any border drawn across it.

Each piece is an attempt to trace what is invisible: the layers a place has endured, and what it quietly refuses to release. I'm drawn to the tension—a landscape that looks still on the surface, and underneath, everything moving. An entire world.

Lacquer was the only material. There was no other choice.

The layers build. Stack. Multiply. One on top of another. Then you polish—each stroke, each careful pass—to reveal what lies beneath. Gold appears. Silver glints. Then you cover it again. The next layer goes down. The process repeats: build, polish, expose, conceal.

That's how gold and silver disappear and reappear depending on how light falls. They're never fixed. They only have meaning in the moving—in the uncertainty of light, of time, of memory. That's how time moves. How we forget, then remember. How what is buried suddenly surfaces.

These works exist around a question I don't think has a complete answer: What makes a place sacred? Does it come from the ground itself—from its minerals, its geology, the simple fact that it exists? Or is sacredness something we pour into it: the grief of those who walked there, the memory of what was built and then destroyed, the meaning we struggle to keep for it?

And what happens when the people who belonged to a place are severed from it? When land becomes only a boundary, a resource, a site of conflict—what remains? Does the earth still remember them? Does that remembering matter?

Hallowed Lands is my attempt to stand inside these questions without needing to find a way out. To witness them fully. To hear them speak. And somewhere in the depth—in the accumulated weight of wound and time, in the layers that layer—to find something that still lives, that still breathes.
